Memory and Traces
Perla KRAUZE
May 16 - Jun 22, 2013

Reception for the artist:   Thursday,  16 May,  six  to  eight  p.m.

Howard
Scott Gallery is pleased to announce the third solo exhibition of recent paintings by the Mexico   City based artist Perla Krauze.

Perla Krauze principal concerns as an artist involve time and memory and the effect which the passage of time has upon material and upon man-made objects -including works of art- as well as the effect of time upon the memory of what one has seen and experienced. Integral to this ongoing investigation is the exploration and use of dualities, dichotomies, and opposites. She works with the contrast between a coexistence of the rational and the intuitive –between the permanent and the ephemeral – the natural and the artificial – and the physical and the spiritual.

These paintings start with actual frottage on the canvas or linen from the floors and pavements she encounters wherever she works. The series is made basically in her studio in Mexico City. Sometimes the imprints are visibly - becoming light, almost fragile drawings on the canvas or linen. At other times they become much more painterly, covered by layers of paint, still the imprints are there. Krauze uses the structure of the stretchers to make many decisions beforehand - how to make more visible the wooden frame in the painting itself.

Ms. Krauze received a Master in Fine Arts degree in 1993 from Chelsea College of Art in London, following studies at Goldsmith's College of London University and at the National University (ENAP) in Mexico City. She has been exhibiting her work publicly since 1983 and has had solo exhibitions at Museo de Arte Carrillo Gil, Mexico City and at Museo de Arte Contemporáneo in Oaxaca. Krauze was invited to the MacDowell Colony for a 3 months residency in 2012.
